My interview with Toronto electronic musician "Luna Seaux"

Keef- Please do tell us who you are and what you do?

Luna - I guess I could say that I am a pianist, composer, music producer, and student of music.
I am still studying and learning as always.
I started playing the piano at the age of 2, Beethoven and Mozart were my earliest favorites.
Mainly, I improvise a lot on the piano, and write piano pieces and I write my other stuff on my mac.
I produce and write my own music, but sometimes I help produce other musicians as well.

Keef- I have spent a while on soundcloud checking all your music. I especially liked "fate cheating ghost in the mirror" and "45kg of existence"
I find electronic music has way too many genres, its IDM, its breakcore, its glitch... forget classifying it, just describe to us what your music is and the sound you create.

Luna- Thank you for checking out my stuff, I really sincerely appreciate it.
As I have mentioned earlier, I grew up with classical music, and when I was about 14 I fell in love with reggae and hip-hop,
I was also a huge fan of brit pop/rock. I used to break dance and tried to freestyle too. haha
Then I got into the whole punk/hardcore scene eventually. I taught myself how to play the guitar, and I got my first guitar
from a friend. It's a 80s Japanese metal guitar by Jackson. A lot people laughed at me, and most of people didn't take me seriously because I was a girl, and this offended me greatly. After playing a show at school as a bassist and vocal, I eventually got over Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious, that's when I discovered "Atari Teenage Riot", a band I respect the most.

As I am answering this, I am listening to their legendary album "Live At Brixton Academy 1999". I first bought "60 second wipe out" and I was totally blown away, not only because I haven't heard anything like this before, but the noise production by Nic Endo   had such a huge impact on me. I eventually got to listen to her solo album "White Heat" and I discovered a whole new world. At that time I didn't know anything about electronic music at all, I didn't know how people created it let alone who else was making electronic music. Neither did I ever know I would be making this kind of music years later!
The reason why I am mentioning a bit of my music history here is because I am not into music for its kind, but rather for what it is. I do not classify between genres, let alone intend to make certain genre. I do sometimes think 'okay, I better add some rap to this one', but it has never turned out as a "hip-hop" or "rap" .

If I like what I hear, then it's great music- it's quite simple that way. sometimes I hear people telling me 'this sound like this' and that really surprises me, because I work with the sound and image that's in my mind and when the work is complete, I do not think about "okay, this is glitchcore" or something. I make what I make, and when it's done it's done.

I do make fun of my own music for not being able to fit into any genres actually.. some words I use to describe my music are "lunaticore" (because my name is Luna) "randomcore" (because I sample random noises and riffs and orchestrate them) or "yabaikore" (yabai means "radical" or "dangerous" in Japanese language)

Keef- How long have you been making music ?

Luna -I seriously can not remember how long I have been making music... I do remember quitting playing the piano when I was 13 but I have resumed my studies and practices about 3 years ago, even when I quit the piano, I still wrote songs on the piano, and sang as well.

As for electronic music I think it has been almost 4 years now. I started out when I moved to a small town, I was bored out of my mind and I had no friends whatsoever, so I started to play around with sounds and effects and eventually made my first song called "Infinite Zer0"
Infinite Zer0 (MRIC RMX) by LUNASEAUX

Surprisingly I got real good responses so, I started keep on making tracks, then I released my first album called "KAMIKAKUSHI" and an EP called "Prepared Razor". After that it became kind of my thing.

Keef -Where do you see your music going down the road, and where would you like to see your music go?

Luna- I plan to study and learn, I feel there is a lot of things that I don't know about. I am a very curious person, and I want to get to know all kinds of music that was ever made.

The two things in life, that I am mostly passionate about is music and film, I want to write film scores eventually. I also want to play the piano as well, and I have a whole stage set-up in my head already, but I'd like to improve myself further before I start. My goal is to become a versatile musician and work with various people from various industries.

I want to make music for films, animes, even soap operas, and also for fashion shows! I am not anti anything, I want to be involved with all forms of art.

Keef-What is the deal with Lativia?

Luna -I realized for a week or so, Latvia was the place where most of my listeners were from, so I started out saying I should tour around Latvia as a joke. It would be really cool if I could but as of now, I can't tour due to health and finance reasons.

Keef -Thank you for your Time Luna, I love what you are doing. I hope to see you opening for Atari Teenage Riot, or doing some music with Nic Endo in the near future.

KEEF -Please do tell us who you are, what you do and what your involved in?

Jesse -I'm first and foremost a fan of horror movies and monsters. I'm also a filmmaker and producer with Foresight Features. We're creating a slate of ten cutting edge horror films.

Keef- do tell us what this movie "Monster ball" is about and who is involved in this project?

Jesse -"Monster Brawl" is about a wrestling tournament to the death set in an abandoned graveyard and featuring eight of the world's most classic monsters. The film depicts a live television broadcast of the event, complete with ringside announcers, managers, fight previews, and the actual brawls. Monsters are divided into two conferences: The Undead and The Creatures. The film stars Dave Foley, Robert Maillet, Art Hindle, Robert Normand Maillet, Jimmy Hart, Herb Dean, Kevin Nash and Lance Henriksen, along with a cast of incredible monsters including Frankenstein, Zombie, Witch Bitch and Werewolf. The film also features dramatic segments of the origins of each monster - haunting back stories that explain how each monster got involved in Monster Brawl.

Keef- What made you decide that you wanted to make this demented movie that I and many other's are so enthusiastic over?

Jesse-It started initially from coffee shop talking, throwing ideas around amongst friends and colleagues, trying to conjure up something that fit within our company's mandate of "low-budget, high-concept". Someone had sort of off-hand mentioned that they'd like to see a film where vampires battle zombies, and as I was driving home later that day I kept going back to that thought and eventually started thinking about a battle amongst all classic monsters. It was a truly explosive idea, we were shocked that something like this had never been done. The decision to make MonsterBrawl  happened over the next few days as it became clear to discard all other concepts and focus on this one.

Keef-Will this make be entered into film festivals, and will it make it to the theater or a strait to dvd release?

Jesse-Yes, we will enter the film into several film festivals with the objective of having it go theatrical. It is something we feel very strongly about considering the cast and the iconic monsters. Monster Brawl has to be seen on the big screen. Like a live MMA or wrestling show, this film is an event in and of itself and should be watched by a crowd together so everyone can cheer on their favorite monster and collectively enjoy the laughs and the action.

Keef- So where was this movie filmed and when can we anticipate a release date?

Jesse -The movie was shot predominantly at a set in Collingwood, Ontario, with a couple of location shoots in the surrounding areas. We're aiming for a summer premiere and an early fall release, 2011.

Keef- I can see this film has generated a buzz and it is growing, is there something you would like to tell the fans and followers of this movie that may get them even more excited?
Jesse- Monsters are universally known and some of the iconic cast in the film are creating some buzz for us. It's a fun concept for a movie and I'm excited to unleash the film when it's done, I think the final fight is going to be
sensational.

You will find success soon, do not quit!!
You got something here, trust me...

HOLY FUCK "Red lights"

They have a controversial name but they make some pretty cool music. I believe they are originally from Nova Scotia but now reside in Toronto.
I found a small write up on them...
The video is from the from the album "LATIN", I am a sucker for cats so this video is extra awesome!

Holy Fuck is an electronic band from Toronto. The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film synchronizer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks.  According to pitchfork media "The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the technique looping, splicing and programming and the like—of that music."

Veronika London interview at THE SMOKING JACKET!

New Steven Page album....

I was watching that news show the W5 last night and they did a segment on Steven Page, former member of THE BARE NAKED LADIES.
I never really cared for their music, not to sound mean but it was just not really my thing.
I was interested in watching this segment because he was coming clean on all the events that he had went threw. These events made the news, lead to his departure of the band, it looked like a bad situation.
I was pretty sure he was just going to fade away and that was it for him.
Not the case, and on October 19th he will be releasing a solo album titled "Steven Page - Page one"
What I found interesting from this interview was that he has done so much good, has had several successes in life... and he makes a mistake and they want to crucify the poor guy.
How many of us have messed up, you have been forgiven and were given a 2nd chance, sometimes multiple chances.
Out of this whole thing for me personally, he has gained a new fan. I have listened to some clips of his new album and I enjoyed it.
All the best to you Steve!

Interview with illustrator Vince Chui

Keef- please do tell us who you are, what you do and what you are involved in?
Vince Chui- my name is Vince Chui, I'm a illustrator. I used to strictly work in games. First starting off as a texture artist and then to concept work. Now I do a little bit of everything from games, commercial work, books etc. It's kind of fun to see what kind of opportunities that are there.

Keef- You worked in the gaming industry, what games were you involved in?

Vince Chui -I had worked on Cel Damage (a launch title for the first xbox), Full Auto, and Full auto 2(which wasn't really a sequal but added content. But marketing felt strongly in saying it was a "2"). I also had worked on Yoville (a facebook game).

Keef- When did you discover you had this incredible artistic talent, and what inspired you to draw?

Vince Chui- Well I wouldn't say I discovered I had "incredible artistic talent". More like, I always had fun drawing and I couldn't stop. I grew up with a lot of people who drew, and it kept me motivated and learning. I wasn't the best, but that didn't stop me from drawing. Other influences that kept me inspired besides friends and family.. I have to say big chunk goes to cartoons and comics. My cousins introduced me to comics (Gibert and Andrew) a huge shelf full in thier basement. I think those were my earliest inspirations that I can think of. And with Cartoons I can't think of any kid that doesn't have that being a big part of their life.

Keef- Explain your facination with Star Dragon and Mecca-godzilla?

Vince ChuiActually if we're strictly talking about Starvengers, Star Dragon is my third favorite. For those that don't know, Starvengers/Getta Robo G has 3 ships that can combine into three different robots, depending in the order they combine. I think compared to most fan's my favorites are in the reverse order. Star Posiedon being 1st, Star Arrow 2nd and Star Dragon 3rd.

As a kid Starvenger's is the whole reason I got robot crazy. There wasn't anything else I was exposed that did transforming robots or combining/gattai. This was pre transformers and pre Voltron (which I'm sure people will be more familiar with). I think the best part of the show was figuring out the heroes were going to match the villian robot. Would they attack with Star Poseidon, Arrow or Dragon... Suspence if they couldn't combine to form the robot. Producing Energy and the benefit of man kind. There's a lot of attributes I loved in that show. It's still pretty entertaining even for me to watch now.
Oh boy I can go on and on with Starvengers.

For Mecca-Godzilla, I can sum it up with "Reese's peanut butter cups". The best of both worlds, mecca Goddzilla represents a duality. Monster's and robots, Nature vs science.

Keef-Are you currently working on any new projects?

Vince Chui -I'm working on the second children's book, a sequal to Sir Seth Thistlewaithe. The rest of the time I'm helping with my friend on her project. My hands are pretty full until the end of the year right now.

Keef- Tell me about Sir Seth Thistlewaith, what is that all about?

Vince Chui -Two young Sir Seth and Sir Ollie of the Mighty Knights of Right & Honour. Their imagination takes them to the Kingdom of Thatwych where they have their first adventures. The kids are all decked out in cardboard, tinfoil and brooms.

Keef-Sometimes the popularity of A T.V. show or toy die out and they are shelved. Years later they are dusted off, they are repacked, remodeled and put out for a new generation to enjoy. What property would you love to have full creative control on?

Vince Chui Oh man there's too many I would love to work on.. Starvenger's/getter robo would be awesome. But really Go nagai is the only person to do it (but I think keeping it fun and pseudo retro style would be ideal). Actually if I had a hand to try something thats more obscure, that I never here anyone thinking of doing is Dinoriders. I never really watched the show, but I think the toys were great! (sigh didn't have any of the toys either).

Keef -What are some of your goals for 2011?

Vince ChuiGoals, I wold love to try a bit of the toy market if I could. I'd also like to be able to work on a children's book I've written and pitch that. I've had the story for sometime, and only recently found the style I would be happy to illustrate it in.

Thank you Vince, this was great your Art is absolutely amazing, I wish you nothing but successes!

Here are Vinces Links... enjoy!
