My interview with DJ Tyra from Saigon...

I remember when Myspace was on top of the heap of social networking, I discovered lots of new music. Everything from people making beats in their bedrooms to big established bands looking to increase their fan base.
I am a huge fan of scratching, I would search for hours  looking for Turntablist on Myspace who would allow you to download a song or 2. I came across Tyra's Myspace a few years back and I was pleasantly introduced to her groovy and energetic music.
I have pestered her over the years on the internet and she has always been a good sport about it.
So when I started this blog I wanted A interview with Tyra so bad, even though now she is living in L.A, her and I grew up in the same city west of Toronto. She is a total success story for female D.J.'s and she is from Ontario.
Before I start, just a heads up... dont be fooled by her beauty, when she gets on the turntables she is A absolute monster and will asphyxiate anything you think is live that you throw at her...

So...  lets us begin...
Keef -Please do tell us how you got into being a DJ and where it has taken you.

Tyra-  I've been playing music all my life. Ever since I was young I always had a knack for making up melodies and music composition. I mostly did this with keyboards and guitars before I knew what turntables even were. Looking back though, I was naturally drawn to pleasing the ears of my listeners. I was known as "the girl who made really good tapes for everybody".  In the summers of my childhood my parents would drop my sister and I off to our babysitters and the only three things I brought with me were my briefcase full of cassette tapes, my Walkman and Gameboy. I would get more excited receiving blank cassette tapes from my father than getting new toys. Since I owned my first Walkman at the age of 8, I began making mixtapes and my dad bought me my first boombox the following year for my grade 4 birthday. It was like the top of the line Panasonic CD/double deck cassette player and I would always bring that thing everywhere with me. He spoiled me with expensive electronics since he was an audiophile himself and that's how I was able to do all these things. When I was in high school I met a couple of DJs from the rave scene and my curiosity began to grow. I figured why wouldn't I be able to do it if these guys can? I had tons of musical experience and knew I was able to pick it up really quickly. I always thought it was so cool how DJs could blend songs together and one day I was at a friends place and one of the guys brought a documentary DVD over called Scratch. I couldn't sleep at all that night after watching that movie. The scratching blew my mind and I came home and told my dad I wanted to buy turntables with my savings. He helped me research all the top brands but I ended up being impatient so I got a used set up on eBay which came with the crappiest mixer. It was such a piece of junk that I couldn't really do much but mix on it but my ultimate goal was to learn how to scratch. I started playing house music because all my equipment could do at the time was just blend records. Later on, I upgraded my mixer and was able to learn some scratching techniques.
Where it has taken me?  I got to meet a lot of dope musicians/DJs and a lot of great people through this journey. I'm not going to lie though, DJ'ing isnt my real love - I'm a songwriter but most definitely, being a DJ/Turntablist has helped me expose myself much easier. I dont think I'd have as much listeners if I just played guitar and wrote songs about heartbreaks.

Keef- You are the founder of "females wit funk", tell us what that is all about.
Tyra -Females wit Funk is a global platform I started back in 2005. When I first started Dj'ing/Scratching I didnt know any girls who did it except for DJ Killa Jewel from Montreal, Canada who I found by fluke on a DVD. I can't describe to you the adrenaline rush I got watching her and how her scratch routine changed my life. I was so inspired my heart was on fire and I had to just share this feeling to other people out there. I didn't even know girls could scratch, I thought only guys knew how to do it and I was so amazed so I did my best to find every girl in the entire universe who was practising this artform and got them together. I approached DJ Q-Bert with this idea before I started it and he said it was great so I launched it right away that summer. We showcase female turntablists who are exceptionally skilled at what they do. Some names to mention are : DJ Shortee, Annalyze, Step 1, Supra and many others. Check it out at www.femaleswitfunk.com . My goal with the concept was just to inspire other girls just like how Killa Jewel did for me and its awesome because I see more girls out there stepping up their game because they see us and know that this kind of talent exists out there.

Keef - I was doing some research on your work, you have met many interesting people in the game and dealt with some big sponsorships, please tell us more!

Tyra- Being a scratch DJ has opened up many opportunities for sponsorships. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that scratch DJs are a lot more technical and know how to work the turntables more than just regular mix DJs. Most of artists I know that are sponsored are scratch DJs or very established big names club DJs/producers. I have worked for a couple companies, to name a few : (Mixvibes, Rane, Pioneer, Ortofon, Innofader, PCDJ) it was really nice to be affiliated with these guys because they make everything I use and being able to demo their equipment to the general public before they release their products was an honor for me. I got my first sponsorship probably three years after learning how to scratch but then again I put in a lot of my time practising to get where I was at that point, I wanted to see progress fast so it pretty much consumed my life for the first few years. I get to travel and meet tons of awesome people and thats the best part about it. Can't complain about the free gear they send you. Right now Im working with this company called Innofader which I truly wish started when I was learning how to scratch. I could have saved myself a lot of money by just buying their special crossfader and installing it in a budget mixer. Innofader makes the best crossfaders out there right now, I even replaced my stock Rane TTM 57 crossfader with the Innofader and am loving it.

Delayed Flares - Scratchlopedia Breaktannica

Keef - Do you wish to continue making music and make a living out of it?

Tyra
-I don't plan on making a living out of music but if I could just quit my day job and do this for life I sure as heck would. Who wouldn't? Depends on what music you're talking about though, I have a hard time selling my personal stuff. I'd rather give away for free since they are my own expressions. Having listeners is more than I can ask for. If somebody wants a beat produced, thats another story. Same with DJ bookings and services like that

Keef -What do you love about the DJ scene and what is something you could do with out...

Tyra -I love that almost everyone's real. They're like family to me, we all take care of each other. The scratch scene especially, they're very supportive too, I haven't met a single hater from what I know. What can I do without? Well I wish that I was able to take up more overseas gigs and (said in the most NON-DIVA way possible), but I wish  that all my flights were first class because I have horrible motion sickness so I really hate flying when I have to travel and play out of town but I do it anyway to a limited distance haha.

Keef
- What advice do you have for up and coming female DJ's?

Tyra
- Listen to the best and surround yourself with the best. Don't be easily satisfied with your progress because us girls get away with too much.  Practice your ass off, and don't eat too much sugar.

Keef- What does 2011 have in store for you, what do you wish to accomplish musically?

Tyr
a -Musically, probably just get back into guitar more. Pump out a couple more mixes, know more popular songs, remix a couple of tracks and maybe get my heart broken a couple of times. That usually gets me going...

Keef -I tried getting you on to DJ HERO 2, I will try harder to get you into DJ HERO 3. You up for that.... we can do it!

Tyra
- Damn, right I am! Make it happen.

Keef- What are you listening to these days?

Tyra- Lots of DJ Divsa. A friend of mine from Toronto introduced me to this guy and he's probably by far one of my favorite DJs these days..  Pretty much everything and anything asides from DJs, I rarely listen to DJ mixes actually but this guy is phenomenal. I recently got into top 40, hip hop, I fell off for a couple years and listening to DJ Divsa definitely inspires me. Plus, hes a Libra and so am I and if you don't know this already, (not speaking for myself) but the best musicians are Libras (known fact). Look it up.

Keef -We are from the same small city west of  Toronto, How do you feel about killing my claim to fame about being the self proclaimed best DJ in town. I saw your stuff and I wanted to cry... how do you feel about that?

Tyra
-Hahaha, Im flattered and I just shed a tear after reading that now.

Keef -Im willing to bet it was a tear from laughing... your so evil...dope but evil! Do you have any shout outs?

Tyra -Hi, Shout outs to : Ro-meo, Mom, Dad, Sister, Thud Rumble, my best friend MOUSE, all the ladies at Females wit Funk, DJ Annalyze, Trippy Tron, Incise, special thanks to ELLIOT from Innofader and the entire team.

Thanks to the world.

Yes he is available for commissions ... contact him HERE!!

FANTASTIC 4 - Spiderman/ghostrider/ Hulk/ Wolverine mash up!

My interview with video/film director Tom Vujcic of REEL WOLF PRODUCTIONS....

Better late then never, I’m a busy guy and Tom is like 100 times more busy as I am…. But we made this happen.

I am a huge fan of La Coka Nostra and everyone involved, House of Pain, Slain and Ill Bill. Anxiously awaiting the release of ill bills newest album “Kill Devil Hills” I came across one of his newest videos “ILL BILL TV”

Right away I noticed the graffiti in the video… “I shot that, I filmed that!” I use to spend hours in all types weather filming and snapping pictures in these alleyways. Besides picking out graffiti, this video is grimy to the bone, which coincides with ILL Bill’s whole musical shabang.

I noticed the directors name, got on facebook, found him and strait up asked him if this was shot in Toronto.

He confirmed it, and I wasted no time in asking Tom for A Interview.

Keef – First off of, how did you land A video directorial for ill bills new album “Kill Devil Hills”?

Tom -I contacted Ill Bill online. He was coming to Canada for a tour. We’ve worked with various rappers within the underground rap scene; but Bill was one of the heavyweights. I’ve wanted to work with him not just because of the exposure; but also because I’m an Ill Bill fan and thought that the project would be exciting. His lyrics paint great visuals. I knew that the video would definitely stand out from other artists.

Keef - So what is the concept behind this great video?

Tom- The concept of the Ill Bill video was to have an adrenaline rushed action-packed shootout involving one man against numerous men in suits with masks. He goes through obstacles and engages in several gun battles which all end in bloodbath. The video is pretty violent but it's shown as very stylized violence. At the end it is revealed that the reason he was being hunted was because he had a copy of the Ill Bill DJ Muggs album. Once the video hit the net; I started reading different interpretations of the ending. There is an official meaning behind it but I would rather leave it open ended for the audience to interpret.

Keef - Who else have you worked with, and tell us about "REEL WOLF PRODUCTIONS"

Tom -Reel Wolf Productions is an independent film & video production company based out of Toronto. It was started in 2009 by me and my partner James Martin. James has also directed several videos for our company. We specialize mainly in music videos and short films. Our ultimate goal would be to make feature films. Music videos & short films are a great starting point for us to promote what we can do as filmmakers. We have worked with various artists. Other than Ill Bill & DJ Muggs we have also worked with other rap artists in the underground scene such as R.A. the Rugged Man from New York, Snowgoons from Germany, Lord Lhus from South Carolina & Riviera Regime from Toronto to name a few. We’ve also done a few non-hip-hop videos for rock and metal artists. This is something that we intend to do more of; so we can branch out and not just stick to one genre.

KEEF-What artist or group would you love to direct a video of?

Tom- There is so many artists in so many different genres that I would love to do a video for. If I were to pick one off the top of my head it would be for Serj Tankian. I was always a huge System of a Down fan; and I really loved his solo album. What I also liked is that he released a video for every song off of that album and each video was unique in its own way. They were all very powerful; some had strong social and political messages and some were just very obscure and quirky. He has a new album coming out so hopefully Serj reads this and considers me as a potential director haha!

Keef- How would some one go about contacting you in making a video

Tom- If you would like to contact us please email us at: info@reelwolf.com

However people have also contacted us through other online outlets such as MYSPACE,YOUTUBE, facebook etc.

Keef- You mentioned making feature films, what kind of film would you and partner James Martin like to make, genre wise ?

Tom -James and I are partners and share the same business ethic; but when it comes to film making we each have our own style and vision. We prefer that because it allows us to diversify our company. As for what kind of genres we would like to do. I think ultimately we would like to cover it all. There is not one genre that we would stick to since our influences stem from films of all decades and origins.

Keef - What is the best thing about Canadian Independent film, and what would you like to see more from it?

Tom -I love the Canadian Independent film scene because it's very open minded and our government really encourages the art of film making. There are several grants given out annually to film makers across the country to make art. My main frustration however is that no one sees our movies. I think the Canadian film scene should focus on investing money towards marketing/promotion. It's a shame when we have such great films coming out of this country and the furthest exposure that they get is within the indie scene.

Keef -What are your plans for 2010/2011?

Tom -For the remainder of this year we will be releasing several more music videos of all different genres. Our goal is to continuously outdo ourselves and in general put out videos that demonstrate our style as directors. Whether our budget is $10,000 or $500 we want to constantly challenge ourselves with what we can do. In 2011, we want to start pushing ourselves more towards the short film market. Be on the lookout for two short films we are producing which are set to be released next year.

Thanks Tom for taking time out of your busy schedule. I am loving the work you guys do, and so do many others.

If you wish to contact Tom please visit…

"Time and Space" Miss Angie Feat. THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS official music video

This is the lead single/video from Miss Angie's upcoming third studio album "Time and Space". This collaboration is kind of surreal to me, considering I was a fan of hers as a kid, and here I am rapping on the title track for her come-back album. This track is co-produced by me and Jeremy Larson, who is a session keyboardist for Mute Math.

Hope y'all enjoy it...

My interview with the very hot and exotic actress...Veronika London.

Veronika London, Up and coming Hollywood Actress

In the span of about a year, Veronika London has seemingly come from being a no-one to being one of the fastest, hottest actresses shooting out of Canada into America mainstream after appearing in two TV- Series for “HBO” and “ SHOWTIME” . She broke all rules and threw out all the advice on how to manage her career with starting out being the "good girl" and instead went full edge. She says " I knew what I wanted from the beginning, I know what I can tap into internally, I know what I want". Not just another pretty face, London’s anticipated starring role as a heroin addict with amnesia in the Independent film” Jane Doe” and feature film “Black Eve” will sure be projects to keep an eye on, showcasing more than “pretty roles”. Maxim has placed her beauty on par with Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie in a spread in 2009, naming her “The Megan Fox of Hollywood North”

Keef -I don’t know if you been asked this but how do you feel being dubbed the “Megan fox of the North"? In my opinion I think you have a hell of lot more talent then she does. I think she looks like a mall chic, I think you look like you could jump off a moving car and kick a zombies head off.

Veronika -Haha that was an awesome statement! I do have the edge and hunger for danger, controversy and kicking butt when it comes on screen roles- it keeps things spicy.

As far as how do I feel about the whole “Fox dubbing” thing- It is what it is- It got me world wide exposure as an up and coming Hollywood actress. - “Show- Business “

Keef - So what is happening with "Burning Amber", I myself is very excited for this film because Paul Roberts and I went to school together and had many mutual friends. Can you tell us a bit about that movie and your part?

Veronika - Small world! The feature “Burning Amber” is in Pre-production and I have starring role in the project. Unfortunately, I can’t disclose much info on the project but keep your eyes open for some news coming up in the near future.

Keef -You were quoted for " breaking all rules and throwing out all the advice on how to manage your career with starting out being the "good girl" and instead went full edge". Do you break rules in your everyday life?

Veronika -Rules are guidelines, you don't have to follow them- but like all actions- their are consequences- The way I see it- If your super-objective consists or breaking some rules- it is what it is- next-

Keef - I am pretty sure we are going to be seeing you in A big budgeted movie soon... if so, what kind of movie would you love to do and who would you like to co-star with?

Veronika - I recently watched “The Last Exorcism”, I would love to play Ashley Bell’s role. I’m very much attracted to controversial disturbed roles or anything drug, raw “New York” style related. Other roles on my list include a female version of Heath Ledger’s role as Joker and something similar to Mila or Jolie style kicking butt. Dream co- star for a project- Al Pacino. I love the legends.

Keef- What is your opinion on Canadian films, I think we need more aggressiveness, films that are in your face! Also, what do you bring and hope to bring down the road to film and television?

Veronika -I think there is a lot of really good Canadian talent and films. It all comes down to marketing- you have to be aggressive, be in peoples faces. I find the Canadian mentality is very different than the states- we are modest, in the south people are more hungry for attention (more strategy, more marketing, more sales- more money)…hence more aggressive. It all comes down to your entrepreneurial business “blue print “.

I bring dimensional truth subtext to the projects I take on and attention. The goal is bring utter escapism.

Keef - So what is happening this September, tell us what this is all about...

Veronika -This fall I’ll be hosting Toronto Screamfest on September 23rd , 2010 at The Fox Theatre .Toronto Screamfest is the brainchild of Mike Klassen and partner Kyle Parry, who have put together an event for new and pro film makers to showcase their talent.

The night will be consisting of first time featured shorts, official shorts which are in the current festival circuit and the screening of Adam Green’s feature film “FROZEN” (Courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment). The night is sponsored by SKG Films, Film Army and the incredible people at Anchor Bay Entertainment!

Keef - 2011 is creeping, what does Miss London have in store for us?

Veronika - Release of Feature Film Jane Doe. The film has been described as a combination of “Requiem for a Dream meets Memento with some grungy Victoria Secret”. Ha. I have title role in the gig- I’m a heroin junkie with amnesia. Also release of Feature Film “Black Eve”.

Keef -Thanks for your time, your truly a bad ass female...
